Emergency Surgery

Dear Friends,
I just wanted to let you know that I will be needing to take a little time off from my blog to recover from emergency eye surgery I underwent today. I had a detached retina repaired, and though I am feeling pretty hunky dory at the moment (pain killers are grand), my surgeon tells me I am in for a fairly rough recovery. I hope to be back soon :)

Time Wasters Wednesday - Let's Get Jammin!

I can still remember the delectably sweet taste of my Grandmother's strawberry freezer jam that I ate as a child. My Dad tells me that Grandma made it every year from the strawberries from her garden, and I remember her storing it in any random jar or container she could find that could hold its

d e l i c i o u s n e s s !

So in efforts to stick to my oath and only give gifts that are handmade, I decided to take a crack at making my own to give as Father's Day gifts. Though I opted for a cooked jam (I needed to practice canning in anticipation of this Summer's harvest!) , I must say that I am seriously pleased with myself. It was my first time making jam and I have never canned before, so it just adds to my delight that it turned out so well!

5 cups crushed fresh strawberries
(they say not to use a food processor as it can break down the natural pectin found in the berries and alter the set)
1/4 cup lemon juice
7 cups sugar (yes seven!)
1 box fruit pectin (I used Ball Natural Gel fruit pectin)

Combine crushed strawberries and lemon juice into a LARGE sauce pan and gradually stir in pectin.
(do not dbl recipe as the fruit will not be able to get up to the right temp)

Bring to a rolling boil that can not be stirred down, over high heat, stirring constantly.

G A S P! Add all that sugar! (Do not reduce or substitute with sweeteners as the sugar is needed to work properly.)

Stirring constantly, return to a rolling boil and let boil for one min.

Remove from heat and skim foam if necessary. (They say you can add a 1/2 tsp of butter to prevent foam, but really... after all that sugar, who wants it to also contain FAT?)

Preserve in jars by following your canning unit's instructions. YUM!

Beauty Tips Tuesday - Breakouts Bumming You Out?

We all know how much of a bummer it is to be plagued with an occasional breakout, but how totally frustrating when you struggle with it on a daily basis! Believe it or not, many persistent bouts of acne are exacerbated by common things like phones, pillow cases, and dirty make up brushes. They all can harbor insane amounts of bacteria, (not to mention styling products, make up residue, and oils from your face), and they are items we generally use everyday.
Touching your face with your hands can be a huge culprit too. Just think of all the things your hands come in contact with! By touching your face needlessly, you are inviting pore clogging bacteria to wreak havoc on your skin.
So make sure to wipe down your cell phone, (I like to use those handy little wipes made to clean computer monitors), change your pillow case often, (if you have a bad case of acne, use ea. side of your pillow once and then change), make sure to avoid touching your face (this includes picking/popping!), and wash your make up brushes often (click here for a how-to).

Must Have!
Even though it is the epitome of Summer outside (91 degrees, full sun, and humid), we just got off of a kick of rain and drear. I scrambled to find indoor activities to entertain my brood last week and it didn't even occur to me to take the kids outside, even though I really enjoy walking out in the rain. There is almost always a sweetly clean smell to the air and it usually brings with it a refreshing coolness, not to mention I get to wear my wellies! So next time it rains, I will be taking advantage of the weather and hauling the kids outside to enjoy it with me, and definitely upgrading my plain black "stash in the car in case of emergency" umbrella, for this adorable show stopper from Target!

Where do you currently live and who do you live with?

We currently live in Toronto, Canada. We were previously living in Singapore - that's where we met and fall in love :P We are currently engaged... and plan to get married sometime this year :) Its just the two of us in our condo apartment. We hope to adopt a pet.. i love cats, whereas my husband loves dogs.

When did your creative ways come to life?

I have always loved jewelry. I would go to the stores, or on line to search for that piece of jewelry to match my outfits. My shoes, bags had to match and come together. So, jewelry to me was the final component to complete that look ! When we moved to Toronto, I had some time in my hands, so I decided to take up a hobby. I haven't looked back since and enjoying every moment creating and coming up with new designs.

Is there any specific event/thing/person that inspired your creativeness?

It was mostly having that treasured time. I used to work as a secretary and used to clock in long hours, that I would hardly have any time to relax, let alone take up a hobby. After moving to Canada, I had some time, and that gave me the opportunity to learn a new hobby and it has been the most rewarding and satisfying decision I have made.

What motivated you to sell your goodies on Etsy?

It was by chance. I happened to visit a jewelry site while surfing on the web and discovered a jewelry designer had a link to her etsy shop as well. I was so amazed and fascinated by the numerous talented artisans on etsy. I was overwhelmed by it initially.

Where do you create your jewelry?

At the moment, I share a small desk area that has been converted to a work space to create my jewelry. We live in a condo with limited space... Sometimes, I would be working on 4 to 5 design pieces at the same time... and it can be challenging to have a flow of things when I have an idea in mind. Most of the time, I have to scribble them in a note book and go back to it another day to finish it.

If you could be famous for doing something you don’t currently do, what would it be? I would love to be on Dancing with the Stars! I just admire the dance movements and the partnership/teamwork bet ween two people. Each type of dance requires skills ranging from upbeat to gracefulness, and at the same time to always be in time with your partner! I think it's lots of fun, hard work, and great for weight loss too!!

Is there one thing you are Superfabulous at or think is Amazing, and can share with my readers?
There is a simple and nutritious dish that I have been making quite regularly now. It's broccoli and pine nuts!
- heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in pan or wok
- add a cup of pine-nuts
- you may add more if you have more broccoli or if you love pine nuts like we do.
- stir fry pine-nuts till they turn golden brown... watch for the heat as they do get brown/burnt easily
- remove and set aside - with the same oil, stir fry the broccoli
- return the pine-nuts to the pan/wok, a pinch of salt and black pepper to taste
- remove and viola! A simple, low fat, and yummy vegetable dish!

List 3 things you hope to accomplish/see/do in your lifetime.
Do as much traveling as possible. I would love to see the world. It really opens up your horizons and perspectives of other cultures... Its so fascinating. Skydive - I am afraid of heights.. but wish to do it one day for the experience and to overcome my fear!

Time Wasters Wednesday - Flower Fairies

It is rainy here in Minneapolis today and my lawn is finally looking green and my garden super lush. Unfortunately, my kids are going a bit stir crazy being cooped up inside, so I spent the morning searching the web for fun indoor activities to engage them, and stumbled upon this absolutely d r e a m y work of art by Elsa Mora. Created entirely of plant parts, I am just mesmerized by its fairy like beauty. I am completely inspired, and though this won't be a fitting project for today, I will never look at a fallen petal the same. I could see our nature hikes turning into gathering adventures that could fuel some pretty amazing creativeness. Maybe we will start with some handmade cards.

So my husband has it in his head that we need to become a family of leisurely bikers. With Rhiannon verbalizing her readiness to trade in her Big Wheel for a "big girl bike" and Ryan's want of extending his boundary past the four corners of our block, I think that the timing is just about right. Minneapolis is ranked really high for biker friendliness and we live in an area where we are spitting distance from multiple parks and lakes that all provide excellent biking trails. And though I haven't been on a bike pretty much since I got my driver's license (though my bike got extensive use prior, and I still have it!), after seeing this adorable bike basket from Huset, it has provided me with some major motivation to dust off that old bike and take it for a spin! Not only is this basket the cutest bike accessory ever, but it converts to a shopping basket in a snap, making it mandatory that you hang up your keys and bike to your local farmer's market!

Where do you live and who do you live with?
I'm from Ann Arbor Michigan and live with my husband of 16 years, our 2 children(a boy and a girl, 16 and 3), and 2 cats.

When did your creative ways come to life?
I've always been creative, but never had a good outlet for it.
Attempted writing, fashion design, all forms of art...nothing let me express myself the way photography does. Though I have always taken
photographs and loved it dearly, I didn't become serious about it until 2006, when my husband bought me my first DSLR.

Is there any specific event/thing/person that inspired your creativeness?
The Mexican surrealist Remedios Varo has been an influence of mine
since I was 17. My grandmother, Muriel, is another source of inspiration. She was forever creating and never gave up.

What motivated you to sell your goodies on Etsy?
I liked the idea of having complete control over my prints and the community was friendly.

Where do you do the creation of your art?
My house is my most common backdrop, and my basement office is where I do all of my post processing. I spend the most time there, at my desk, creating and promoting.

Do you currently create full time, or do you also have a day job?
This is it!

If you could be famous for doing something you don’t currently do, what would it be?
I'd love to be a famous actress, ballerina, or opera singer!

My only tip is to never doubt yourself and never give up. Do only what feels right to you and stick to your guns. You can do and be anything you set your mind to, so Dream Big!

I would like to see Europe. Ive been to London, but I've never been to France or Italy or Spain and I'm dying to go!
I want to see my kids get married and have grand kids.
I want to be financially independent.

Any future plans for your business?
I want to start shooting film for awhile and have some ideas for a book that I'm tossing around. I would like to see it grow slow but steady and be something I can do for a long, long time.

Little Bites O'Yum! - Easy Chocolate Mousse

I whipped these up to bring to a neighbor's BBQ recently and thought I would share the recipe with you!

2 boxes of Fillo mini shells (or you could sub yummy baked wanton wrappers)

3/4 cup softened cream cheese

1/2 cup marshmallow creme

1 large box of instant chocolate pudding

1 cup heavy whipping cream

1/2 cup skim milk

raspberries for garnish

With an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and marshmallow in a large bowl until smooth (if you stop here you will have a super yummy fruit dip!)

Add pudding and whipping cream to mixture and beat on medium speed until blended.

Add milk and continue beating until stiff peaks form (be careful not to over mix. It can be remedied with a splash of milk if you do.)

Pipe mousse into Fillo cups with an icing bag and frosting tip of your choice, or you can load a plastic baggy and snip the corner.

Garnish with raspberries and chill until served.

I filled 24 cups and had a bit of mousse left over. I just piped the remainder into champagne flutes, alternating with a layer of raspberries, and had enough for a dessert for two. Enjoy!

Beauty Tips Tuesday - Wash that Brush!

Having problems with breakouts? When was the last time you washed your cosmetic brushes? If you answered "I'm supposed to wash my brushes?", then there is a good chance that they are to blame for your skin woes. Proper skin care extends far beyond your daily dose of lotions, potions, and serums! It is also ensuring that the tools you use to apply your make-up are well kept and clean. Your brushes can harbor insane amounts of bacteria, aggravating sensitive and problem prone skin. Good brush care equates to washing your brushes at least every two weeks with a cleanser specifically made for brushes, (once a week if you are acneic). Not only does washing your brushes rid them of ick, but it also prolongs the life of the tool. Brushes are not cheap, so why not protect your investment? Any quality brush should last you upwards of 3 years with proper care, not to mention clean brushes have softer bristles and apply make-up more evenly. So suds up!

Follow these simple steps and beat the blemish blues!

* with very warm (but not hot) water, wet your brush (do not soak)

* put a dime size amount of brush shampoo in the palm of your hand (this is enough for multiple eye brushes or a larger kabuki style brush)

* "paint" the brush back and forth on your hand and use your fingers to work the cleanser through the bristles to fully emulsify the dirt and debris (do not swirl or mash, as it can cause bristle damage)

* holding your brush at a downward angle, rinse until the water runs clear

* using your fingers, squeeze any excess water from the brush (make sure there are no suds remaining), reshape (closed tulip shapes for face brushes), and lay flat to dry.

Eye brushes will dry in just a few hours and face brushes should dry overnight. It is important to not use water that is too hot and to hold your brushes at a downward angle, in order to prevent damage to the binding glue. Additionally, using clarifying shampoos made for your hair on your brushes can strip natural bristles and make them dry and feel straw like on the face. It is best to stick with one that is specifically made for brush cleaning, as these cleansers often have moisturizing agents to keep bristles s o f t.

When did your creative ways come to life?

The first memory of my first creative moment was in first grade. We were coloring paper Native Americans for Thanksgiving. There happened to be a penny under the paper and I colored over it. I thought it gave it a cool look, so I started doing the whole piece with penny rubbings. I remember my teacher coming by and he was very upset and said something to the effect that it looked horrible and that it didn’t go with what everyone else was doing, but I didn’t care. I continued to use that penny and was very proud of the result. It wasn’t until 8^th grade that I realized that I had true potential in art. That’s when I concentrated on my calling and the rest is history!

Is there any specific event/thing/person that inspired your creativeness?

I’m always inspired by different things, people and events. Once I get inspired I have to make it, build it, or sketch it out right away. I just can’t stop thinking about it until it’s complete, or at least given a good try.

Where do you create your crafts?

I am one of those types of people that just can’t create in one spot. I like changing my environment. I could be working at the kitchen table one day or at my desk the next.

Do you currently create full time, or do you also have a day job?

I have a full time job[graphic designer], but I would love to be working on my creations full time at some point. I am working towards that goal everyday!

If you could be famous for doing something you don’t currently do, what would it be?

I would love to be famous for inspiring others to be creative. I have a passion for creativity and I love sharing it with others, it would be so fantastic if, someday, I could take it global and inspire all around the world.

Besides your craft, what things do you enjoy doing in your down time?

I love playing the piano when I have access of one. Hanging out with friends and family. I also enjoy the occasional road trip with my husband.

Time Wasters Wednesday - Making Vanilla and Lavender Sugars

Add a little unexpected flavor to your everyday recipes by substituting an infused sugar for a plain one! They are incredibly simple to make and extremely versatile. Vanilla sugar measures cup for cup in any recipe that calls for granulated sugar, and you can substitute 1/4 - 1/2 of the lavender sugar in place of the plain.

Lavender Sugar Recipe:

* 2 tbs. dried organic culinary lavender
* 2 cups ultrafine Baker's Sugar (regular sugar can be used, but I prefer Baker's sugar because it is great for dusting baked goods, sprinkling on fresh berries, and stirring into beverages. It is so fine that it almost melts instantly, which also makes it ideal for making smooth and creamy frostings/icings.)

Use a spice and nut grinder to reduce the lavender buds to a fine looking powder. (A mortar and pestle will work too)

In a mixing bowl, add lavender to the Baker's sugar.

Mix until evenly incorporated.

Pour into an air tight container and and let sit for at least 48hrs before using.

Vanilla Sugar recipe:

* 2-3 Vanilla Beans (Vanilla beans pack so much flavor, that you can reuse pods that were used in a different recipe. Just make sure they are dry.)
* Baker's Sugar to cover

Slice beans down the center, but do not scrape out. (No problem if you used the seeds for a different dish, the pods themselves are still highly concentrated with flavor.)

In an airtight container, pour the Baker's sugar over the beans until they are covered. Vanilla sugar needs a good 4-6 weeks to infuse before it is ready, (less if you use more beans). It also helps the infusion process if you give your sugar a shake every few days. Don't worry if seeds appear in your sugar, this will only make it more flavorful. The one really great thing about vanilla beans is that they will flavor your sugar for an insane amount of time. Just keep topping off your jar and you will have limitless amounts available when you need it!

Don't keep it to yourself! Why not share it with friends? When your sugar is ready, you can pour it into individual jars,(Ball makes some adorable 8oz jars that would work perfectly!), attach a little note, recipe, or custom label and give it as a gift. They would even make excellent inexpensive,(homemade) wedding favors!

Since vowing to break my Coke Zero addiction (it has been almost a month people!), I have had to seek out other forms of caffeine in order to keep my headaches under control. I've primarily been leaning on coffee these last few weeks, but am trying to reintroduce myself to tea (and it's decaffeinated sister), and have been thinking that I might be more encouraged if I had a cute little pot to brew it in. If you know me at all then you know that I have an insatiable appetite for sweets. When others around me say "Oh this is just so rich I can only eat a few bites", I say "Grab me a fork!". I have very little understanding of too sweet and too rich (and sometimes too full), so therefore I have to take some measures to prevent myself from going overboard. One of the ways I do this is to seek out mini desserts, or as I like to call them, little bites O' yum. Built in portion control is all I have to say! After lots of planning and serious excitement, my husband and I finally put in a raised garden. We have both wanted to do this for some time now, and with the cost of organic produce and the need to save pennies, we figured there was no time like the present! Here are some photos of the project.

Before pic. We planted on the South side of our house.

We made it a family affair! Here the kids are helping my husband make the 4x8 cedar frame.

We lined it with landscape fabric to prevent weeds.

We then filled it with horse manure compost we purchased from a local farmer and used kite string to make a grid.

Then this guy stopped by and had to check out every corner of the bed before flying off. Anyone know what it is? We figure it is in the moth family, but we have never seen one like this before.

Three kinds of tomatoes, acorn and summer squash, sweet peas, salad greens, radishes, cucumbers, eggplant, red and green bell peppers, onions, two kinds of hot peppers, rosemary, sage, cilantro, basil, chives, and lavender... Finished!

My neighbors are so generous and offered up some of their raspberry bushes. I plan on planting those to the right of the down spout later this week, and then installing a rain barrel to the right of the compost bin.

Beauty Tips Tuesday - Pout Perfect Sugar Scrub

Leave behind peeling chapped lips and uncover ridiculous softness with a simple scrub made just for your lips! You could spend a pretty penny on this equally lovely product that I previously recommended, or you can whip up your own with just a few ingredients you most likely already have on hand.

DIY Pout Perfect Sugar Scrub (or whatever you want to call it!)

2 tsp. granulated white or brown sugar
1 tsp. olive, jojoba,sweet almond, or grape seed oil

Mix to a paste type texture and apply to lips. Using your finger, gently rub in a circular motion to loosen flakes. Remove any excess with a tissue or a warm damp washcloth (what I use). Follow up with an application of your favorite hydrating SPF lip balm to seal in moisture and protect newly revealed skin.

This recipe is very basic and liberties can be taken to dress up your concoction if you so desire. You can substitute honey(natural antibacterial), for the oil, baking soda for the exfoliant, and add essential oils to your hearts content. Try a few drops of cinnamon oil to help plump (it acts as an irritant that will increase blood circulation to the lips and temporarily plump), lavender oil (calms and soothes), lemon/orange/grapefruit oils (yum!), and rose oil (antioxidant). If you have a little jar, you can store any extra and stash it in your meds cabinet so it is always on hand!

I know I haven't been consistent with my blog the last two weeks and appreciate you hanging with me. Things have been so crazy busy all of a sudden and I decided I should tend to some family business before Summer really gets underway. School is out in a mere 3 weeks, so I have been busily planning out the children's summer schedules in hopes that I will successfully achieve that oh so fine work-life balance.

A couple Spring cleaning projects are being wrapped up and a few maintenance projects have gotten underway. I was so happy to finally get flowers planted in my urns yesterday and uprooted all of the dandelions in the yard. I got the backyard mowed, weeded the flower beds, and picked up the million little sticks that shook loose from the overhanging trees. We have decided to try our hand at gardening this year and so are also in the process of plotting out a 4X8 spot for some yummy produce and a 3X3 spot for herbs. Any great gardeners out there? I could seriously use a few pointers!

In addition to all of that, I have been working on tweaking my blog format and am really excited to put the changes in place. It will include an expanded Peddler's Podium spot with specials/sales, reader promotions/giveaways, and a revised Lust and Must Monday. So stay tuned!

No more will I reach for you in the early hours of my day for a jump start and then every 2 hrs after. No more will I scour the sales adds to find you for the cheapest price, and bring you home in bulk (you take up a heck of a lot of room you know!) Yes, I have decided to give you up. Let you go. Be set free from this madness! I know that you have compromised my teeth due to your sweet acidity. I know that my bones are suffering and my skin is not as radiant as it could be, (thanks to all of that water purging caffeine of yours). I won't even begin to touch on your suspect ingredients list, I have enough on you to know that I need to reacquaint myself with my Brita pitcher. Interestingly enough, my addiction to you started when I began a weightloss program some two years ago. You seemingly helped me along my way to losing 38 lbs. But back then I didn't depend on you so much and well... now I depend on you a lot and I gained back 15 of those lbs! So today it begins. It is already mid afternoon, and I have only had one Coke Zero. That is a good start I think. I know it to be wise to slowly wean yourself off of caffeine, so I have stocked up on coffee and tea. What to do about that insatiable desire for carbonated loveliness? My wonderful husband came home armed with some bubbly H2O to help strengthen my defenses! And so it begins...

You know it really is Spring when May Day arrives. The snow is gone, the temps are slowly climbing, and the tulips are in full bloom (all but mine!). We didn't do baskets this year, but for sure I will have to make time to whip up some of these polka dot ones with the kids next year. I found a template for it on the crafty blog Skip to my Lou.

Today didn't go unmarked though, my daughter Rhiannon and I enjoyed a special Spring time lunch together and also made some tissue paper flowers (spritzed with perfume of course!) Do you do anything special to celebrate May Day?

Though I rock my tunes on a little aqua blue Shuffle, I thought maybe I could still use this pattern to make "play food" for my 4yr old's kitchen. Undoubtedly, many of you have already gotten your Spring Cleaning projects well underway. Raking yards, cleaning garages, starting seeds, and preparing flower beds. And I am certain there are a few of you that have already completed the seasonal wardrobe swap of packing away the mittens and scarves and bringing out the umbrellas and rain boots. But have you cleaned out your cosmetics drawer? With the changing of the seasons, I swap out my colors like I do my clothing. I have quite the collection at this point and though most of my eye, face, and cheek colors are loose minerals (so they don't go bad), I do have to sort through my mascaras, lipsticks, and glosses. Here is a link to an article that lets you know when you should replace what.

After tossing out your old stuff you may find that you are in need of some replacements. With the warm weather months just ahead of us, it is a good time to pick up products that are hassle free and resistant to meltdowns. For those of you who find concealer isn't enough and are in need of a summer weight foundation, I highly recommend a tinted moisturizer like Korres Watermelon Lightweight Tinted Moisturizer $28 or Laura Mercier Oil free Tinted Moisturizer $42. Both provide a good amount of coverage and broad spectrum sun protection, (SPF 30 Korres/SPF 20 Mercier. Though Korres is less expensive, it is only offered in 3 shades (but has a higher SPF), where as Mercier comes in 7.

Another great option (and the one I personally use year round), is to go with a mineral foundation like bareMinerals SPF 15 foundation $25, from Bare Escentuals. It is lightweight, naturally water resistant, and provides a physical, non-chemical SPF 15 barrier. Offered in 15 colors, you shouldn't have a problem finding the perfect shade.
Another perk: Since it is basically made of rocks, and rocks don't have the ability to harbor bacteria, you don't have to worry about it going bad. Just make sure to shampoo your brushes regularly.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! Family matters kept me away last week and it took me all day to get caught up. I will be back to my regular posting tomorrow. The Perfect Boiled Egg.

Since many families will be participating in the tradition of decorating their eggs for the arrival of that jelly bean loving, cotton candy colored (according to my 4yr old), basket baring bunny; I thought I would repost this tutorial on how to boil eggs.

Deviled eggs were something that was always made for holidays and special occasions in my home growing up, and they were one of those foods that everyone looked forward to. (They rank right up there with turkey and stuffing.) I am not exactly sure when the tradition began, but I happily keep it going :)

Now when it comes down to making these "little bites of yum", (pretty much what I call anything yummy that can be devoured in a bite or two), there are TONS of different ways. I will generally enjoy almost any, except those made with sugar. Yuck! (sorry Great Grandma-in law) But now what I find is a must in any good deviled egg recipe, is properly boiled eggs.

I was taught to boil eggs by just putting as many as you need into boiling water and guesstimating the cook time. But I couldn't help noticing that all of the yoke centers always came out looking greenish gray on the outside and not bright sunny yellow like the ones I saw in magazines, cookbooks, etc. So that sent me on a quest to find an answer. What I found, is that my (and my Mom's, and whoever taught her) method for egg boiling was causing the unfavorable discoloration in our yolks. So yesterday I tried a new method and sure enough, my yolks were perfect! Not only was there no discoloration, but I found the yolks to be more creamy and a dream to pipe through my Wilton's icing tips. So what was the method? I got my instructions from the egg experts at www.IncredibleEdibleEgg.org .

To get started, put as many eggs as you want or can fit in a single layer on the bottom of a pan or pot. Put the pan in the sink. Run water into the pan until the water is 1 inch over the eggs. Put the pan on a burner. Turn it to medium-high heat.

Let the water come to a boil. Put the lid on the pan when the water is boiling. Move the pan onto a cold burner. Set the timer for 15 minutes for Large-sized eggs (or for 12 minutes for Medium-sized eggs or for 18 minutes for Extra Large-sized eggs).

Put the pan in the sink when the time is over. Run cold water into the pan until the eggs are cool. Put the eggs into the refrigerator if you're going to use them later or peel them if you're going to use them right away. Be sure to use all the cooked eggs up before a week is over.

Here's a couple helpful hints:

When I know I am going to be needing to boil up a bunch of eggs, I buy my eggs in advance and let them sit in the fridge for a week (but no longer then 10 days) before I cook them. The reason for this is that I have found it much easier to peel aged eggs then ones fresh from the market. If you want nice centered yolks, you will not want to use eggs older then 10 days, otherwise the whites will thin out too much and cause the yolk to move around. If you find yourself not able to use older eggs, you can always use this nifty egg peeling method :)

Don't have an egg carrier and worried about your eggs slipping around during transport? Just put a layer of matchstick carrots on the bottom of a baking dish and place the eggs on top. They add great color and help your eggs to stay put!

Alright I admit it. I am officially addicted. I just can't get enough of these adorable little dots! You hear of it happening to the typical shop-a-holic. You know, they find something they love and have to buy one of every color available, sometimes two? Well, now apparently it can happen to those with fabric addictions too! I am forever buying yards of these cutified micro dot fabrics and always on the hunt for new colors. They are a true fabric stash staple, as they coordinate with just about everything. I love using them for my bitty button accessories too and whipped these up while the kids napped yesterday. They are all ready to be made into some cutie Springtime goodies. . . hairpins, earrings, push pins, and magnets. They will be available in my shop soon! Also, I am busily preparing for my apron and kitchen/textiles launch. Here is a sneak peek at a prototype of one of my new apron designs. Nothing much inspires me more then Spring. After a long cold winter here in the Midwest, even the littlest signs get me excited! One of my most favorite food indulgences in life (outside of the cupcake), is a soft, ooeygooey, melt in your mouth, buttery, handmade caramel! Like cupcakes, caramels come in a tempting array of flavors, most of which I will devour without hesitation (Except those black licorice flavored ones!). However, nothing quite tops a well made salt caramel, or a Fleur De Sel caramel as the French refer to it.

I remember having my first one ever. It was at Marshal Fields of all places. I must have been like 15. Even at that tender age I knew that I was eating something special. It was dipped in chocolate and had a stripe of gray salt sprinkled across the top. Mmm... I have been on the lookout for those little bites of yum ever since! Just so happens that I stumble upon a shop on Etsy that sells some! Let me tell you that these have just been added to my MUST TRY list, along with their Mayan Chocolate and English Tea Time flavors! Wouldn't this just make the perfect Mother's Day gift? (hint, hint /wink)

Beauty Tips Tuesday - Why bake when you can fake?

A sure sign of warmer temps is less clothing and more skin. I have already given you tips on pro tecting your assets from the damaging rays of the sun, so this week I thought we would talk about the safest ways to say goodbye to those shades of alabaster and hello to the JLo Glow!

So many of you out there are probably aware of the dangers of tanning beds. However, I suspect that many of you also think that if you don't use them often or only use them to get your "base tan" that you will be safe. Wrong on both counts. First of all, the concept of building yourself a "base tan" so that you won't get burned will at best give you a SPF of 4. Which in terms of sun exposure is practically nothing. You might as well be unprotected. Secondly, your skin accumulates damage. So it doesn't matter if you are outside unprotected 5 min here/5 mins there while running errands, or at the beach unprotected for 45. Your skin collects this damage. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that these newer high pressure tanning beds that tout about not "burning" your skin, are seriously misleading. They work by filtering out most of the UVB rays that burn your epidermis (outer layer of skin), but give you a more powerful blast of UVA rays which also burn, but on a much deeper, less detectable level. Burning, as a matter of fact, is our body's way of warning us that we have had too much UV exposure. With out that visible alarm, we may sustain higher levels of damage with out even being aware, and of course this damage is inherently what takes away from our youthful appearance. Loss of elasticity/tone, skin discolorations, wrinkles, and in a rising number of super scary cases, skin cancer.

But why bake when you can fake? Why take the risk if you don't have too? There are plenty of of products that will give you that perfect glow and the technology behind these self tanners is improving every year! With these few tips in your back pocket you will be on your way to a new bronzed beauty you, and far away from looking like this orange Umpa Lumpa.

First things first. You need to prepare your skin. The dry wintry weather has undoubtedly left your skin parched, so I always recommend using an exfoliating scrub to smooth (paying special attention to knees and elbows), and following up with a great moisturizer. I recommend hydrating for a few days before your initial application of self tanner for best results. Need some pointers/recommendations? View my previous post. Smooth, well hydrated skin will give you a more even application and give you less of an opportunity for unsightly streaking.

For lotion/foam/gel applications:

1. Layer! Do not do a heavy application to start. Do a light application and layer to achieve the desired depth of color. (Especially important if you are fair skinned!)

2. If you are very fair or skittish, mix a bit of body moisturizer (in your hand) with your self tanner to dilute it.

3. Apply a very light layer of moisturizer to your knees, ankles, and elbows just prior to application. These areas tend to have dryer/thicker skin and are prone to absorbing more product.

4. Work in small sections and work fast. Divide your body into sections and do one at a time to ensure even coverage. (ie. lower leg, upper leg, lower arm, upper arm etc.) Work quickly so the product doesn't sit in any one area longer then another giving an uneven appearance.

5. Brown hands? Put a layer of sunscreen on them before you start. This will help keep the sunless tanner from absorbing into the skin so quickly. Additionally, I always have a pumice stone by the sink and use it on my palms with warm soapy water.

6. Refrain from or limit the use of self tanners on the face. Unless you are really experienced at self tanning and don't have sensitive skin, I wouldn't. Additionally, many women who exercise proper skin care are most likely using products on their faces that are made to exfoliate. This means that the color on your face will end up fading much faster then that of your body and you will need to reapply daily to keep up. I would just pick up a stellar bronzing powder and use that instead. It will give you a much more natural finish anyway, (unless you are going to be frolicking in the H2O), then I would pick up a sunless product made specifically for the face. Just be warned, as DHA (the active ingredient in sunless tanners) can cause breakouts.

After achieving your perfect tan, make sure to extend the life of it by keeping up with daily applications of body lotion. Also, I recommend using a moisturizer that is advertised to give you "gradual color" in between full color applications. These are basically just lotions that contain small amounts of self tanner. Because they have less, you don't have to be so careful and it will help to maintain your color while keeping you hydrated. WIN WIN!

I hope you all had a great day! The temperatures this week were quite divine and the snow is mostly gone. Even though it was rainy and gray today I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. The children dusted off their bikes and reunited with neighborhood friends earlier this week and we started the process of inventorying last year's warm weather gear. Both kids have grown like weeds, especially my little one. Nothing of hers fits, not even the larger stuff I purchased in advance! I have a feeling I will be making a lot of her stuff this summer. I bought these fancy shmancy gloves as a gift for my mother from fellow Minnesota Etsy seller Julie Meyer. I thought they would be just perfect for her as a self employed Cleaning Lady. Somebody has got to do the dirty work, and as a woman who has been doing it successfully for over 15 years, she has experienced her fair share of dry chapped hands. I am guessing she is going to love these! Getting winter skin summer ready is something that is probably on every one's mind. We all yearn for that youthful glow but are many times unsure just how to get it. With these simple tips, you can achieve it in no time!

Wake up a winter face by kicking exfoliation up a notch! To uncover healthy skin, you must clear away the dead, dry, wintry stuff. Removing dull cells reveals the new skin underneath, helps keeps pores clear of trapped debris, and makes moisturizers and anti-aging products penetrate your skin better. To help tackle this rougher, tougher skin, you need something strong, like a cosmeceutical strength weekly at-home peel treatment. I like MD Formulations My Personal Peel System, which allows you to effectively whisk away dead skin cells and customize your professional treatments according to your own skin's concerns and changing needs. I however do not recommend it if you have very sensitive skin, and would instead recommend that you use the Sensitive Skin Repair Complex daily (also by MD Formulations).

As I mentioned in a previous post about body care, removing dead skin cells is only the start! Another factor in winter skin is the seasonal dip in the production of natural lipids (skin oils that seal in moisture). A simple way to replenish this loss is with hydrating masks. There are of course a lot of really great mists out there, so just keep your eye on the ingredients and look for ones that have oil free hydration, humectants, really light non irritating fragrances or fragrance free (nothing minty or citrusy on the face if you are sensitive), and antioxidants. I recommend Bare Escentuals Rare Minerals Facial Mist, Jurlique Lavender Hydrating Mist, and MD Formulations Moisture Defense Antioxidant Spray. You can buy the little travel containers at any major retailer in their travel isle or sometimes they can even be found at the dollar store. I recommend stashing the travel sizes on you everywhere to encourage use. Oh! and they are especially great during travel. Airplanes can be TERRIBLY drying and having a small 3 oz travel bottle in your carry on can prove to be a life saver! I assure you, if you follow these tips, your skin will be glowing in no time!

It's Friday the 13th and today is traditionally seen as a day of misfortune or bad luck. According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, taking flights or even getting out of bed. "It's been estimated that [US]$800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day". Despite this, representatives for both Delta and Continental Airlines say that their airlines don't suffer from any noticeable drop in travel on those Fridays. More on this report can be seen here. Mother nature has been teasing me the last few weeks . . . showing off her bright sun rays and melting snow, only to swirl in fresh flakes and cold temps on the tail of a warm breeze. It makes me antsy. . . hard to sit still. Makes my mind whirl with the planning of warm weather fix up projects. Like painting. Lots of painting. The garage, the house trim, the front door. And landscaping. The planting of flowers and herbs. Oh and those sweet little baby peas that my 4 yr old insists we grow, and not because she like peas, but because they are her imaginary friend's favorite! So many things to do, only if Spring would officially arrive. Though Spring is undoubtedly well on her way, many of you are not likely to wait. The itch, the cabin fever, it runs rampant this time of year and the most common cure is to plan a little warm weather getaway. Anyone that knows me well, knows that I am a huge advocate for protecting your skin against sun damage. I do this for mostly vain reasons, but also know it is good for my health. As a make-up artist, almost all beauty concerns from my clients stem from sun damage. Seriously!! Aside from blemishes and the rare skin disorder, ALL concerns are damage caused by UVA and UVB rays. Wrinkles, enlarged pores, hyper pigmentation, texture problems, elasticity issues, etc. Women will sit in my chair and want a quick fix but not heed my warnings of applying SPF daily, protecting themselves from over exposure, and using tanning beds. They will be taken with the make-up, but not give the sunscreen a second thought.
Cosmetics can do very little if the texture of your skin is less then lovely. Make-up really only looks as good as the skin that it is applied to. This is where a couple good skin care products and a consistent routine can help reduce some of the damage, but long term benefits relay on prevention. Goodies from the Postman!

O.K. well not really from my Postman. But he did have a hand in making sure the package made it safely to my door, so some credit should be given, (even though I have yet to get that dude to crack a smile). As far as the contents of that package, it contained a screen printed tea towel that I was so lucky to have WON from a contest that I had entered on fellow Etsian Cristina's blog. I must say that this towel is Superfabulous! Not only does it look amazing in my "martini olive" green kitchen, but I love that they leave my glasses lint free. And yes we hand dry in this house because get this . . . we don't have a dish washer! Ho hum. The tea towel is crafted by the ever so talented (musically too, just check out her website, she has videos and everything), of The Heated. I must tell you that I am so very impressed with the quality of her work, and after reading her blog, much enjoy the cheekiness of her wit!

Beauty Tips Tuesday - To pluck or not to pluck?

Today we tackle brows. I am sure most every woman has either seen, heard, or experienced a bad brow job. And by "job" I mean either self inflicted or the unfortunate "victim" of an under trained/unskilled brow tech. But lets face it, bad experiences or not, every woman's brows should get at least a little attention! A well shaped brow can not only define, highlight, and open up the eye (read, make you look more rested and youthful) but also frame the face. Before digging out your tweezers though, there are a few things you should know.
First of all, thin is NOT in! I am not sure who started the whole fad (my Mom says she used to pluck her brows withing an inch of their lives back in the 70's.) And though many amazing fashion trends came from that era, tweezing your brows to the sparsest of lines should have stayed there. Naturally full brows are a much better look and less work to maintain. If you have never had your brows shaped, then it is always my recommendation to seek out a great brow technician at a reputable salon to shape your brows for you. After that, you should be able to maintain the shape yourself fairly easily, only needing to make a trip to the salon a few times a year for "clean-ups".

Word to the wise, do not skimp on your brow tech! I would rather pay more knowing I am in good hands, then sit, hold my breath, and hope for the best. Just because the local "snip and save" is running a deal doesn't mean you should take them up on it. I did this once (and only once) when I was much younger. I ended up asking my brow butcher how she got into the "business" and she said, "Oh, well none of the other stylists really like doing waxes, so my manager gave me a shot at it. But don't worry, I have watched this done many times before." I had asked this only after she had already completed a brow, and hot wax had been applied to the other. I am sure you all can imagine how that turned out.

So to keep your brows in tip top shape, you need only to follow a few simple steps and some great visual pointers!

Trimming Yes, get out the snips! Believe it or not they do actually sell little scissors just for this purpose and I recommend picking up a pair. Using a set of mustache or manicure scissors works well also, and they can be found almost anywhere. Start by combing the brow hair straight up and clipping those that extend passed the natural hair line. This may only be necessary for those with long brow hairs. Do the same in the opposite direction (down) and trim. Then use a clear brow gel to groom your brows (hair gel/clear mascara works in a pinch), so that all the hairs lay in the same direction. Get your tweezers out. A good pair of pluckers will get you better results, (they grab more easily and don't break the hair before the root). I recommend those with a slanted edge because they aid in getting at the itty bitty new hairs just as they are coming in. Use these to clean up any strays above and below your arch, and in between your eyes. (DO not, I repeat, DO not go overboard!)

Here are a few helpful hints. How do you know where your brow should start and where it should stop? Simple! Take a pencil or eye shadow brush and place it vertically against your nose (that is up and down people), so that it runs the length of your nose and crosses over the inner corner of your eye. This is the starting point for your eye brow. Next, (using your nose as the pivoting point) place the pencil diagonally so that it runs from the center of your mouth, skims the corner of your nose/nostril (pivot pt), and runs across to the outer edge of your iris (colored part of the eye). This is where your natural arch should be. Lastly, pivot the pencil so that it the it runs to the outer corner of the eye. (Make sure the tip of your pencil is not at the corner of your outer eye, rather the edge of the pencil should skim your eye and the pencil tip should rest on your brow bone.) This is the ending point for your eye brow.

Wow that is helpful, but what if I don't have much brow to speak of? As a make-up artist, this is one of the most common issues and one of the most simple to fix. There are many lovely products available on the market designed just for you! I personally do not recommend using brow pencils to fill in thin areas, as pencils are most often made of waxes and usually leave you with that "drawn in look" and tend to fade and smear with heat. I much prefer powders because of their more natural result and staying power. Here are two great options.

Bare Escentuals - Essential Brow Kit (comes in many color options) - $32

Tarte - Tarte the toolbox: brow know-how - $32

Working within your freshly measured start/arch/finish guidelines, take a stiff angled brush (both kits provide one), and fill in sparse areas with feather light strokes. Always begin application in the center of the brow working your way towards the front (starting point), to eliminate a harsh "edge" at the front of your brow from a freshly "loaded" brush. Set your color with either brow gel or brow wax (depending on the kit). As a last little FYI, a closely matched eye shadow will work in a pinch and in some hard to match cases, is the best way to find your perfect color. voila! ♥

I apologize for being MIA for two days. I have been keeping some really crazy hours lately and unfortunately it caught up to me. I guess the years are starting to creep up :(
I remember the days when it was just easier to pull an "all nighter" then it was to risk having to wake up before finishing a REM cycle. It was always murder to get going once I laid down; I just always found it easier to keep going I guess. Not the case anymore. Maybe it is the demand of kids that takes the extra toll. In any case, I have been really productive in my two day hiatus, (in between my naps), getting down to the business of whipping up scads of goodies for the shop. I thought I would give your a sneak peek of a couple. It was really sunny today and I took advantage of the sunlight until it was gone, taking over 300 photos. Hopefully I will be able to get all the newness listed in the shop by mid week!

Today is just one of those days. Most of us by now have learned the ins and outs of managing our monthly "gifts" (as Tampax likes to call it); not letting our symptoms put a hitch in our step, but every once in a while it will get the best of you. Every woman has a day now and then and today is mine. Tired, moody, unmotivated, and a sweet tooth that is out of control. And today, I know that I must keep a box of tissues handy, because there will most likely be spontaneous crying. Well, probably not crying, but I know there will be some tear welling and gulping down of throat lumps. And yes, they will probably be spurred by a song on the radio, or a commercial with puppies or playing children(or some other ridiculousness), or maybe a dooms day update on the economy. (Though if I get that update from Anderson Cooper, I might just smile a little through my tears.)

In light of my mood today I leave you to watch this.

Time Wasters Wednesday - What's your decorating style?

I am not exactly sure how or even when I stumbled upon this nifty site, because sometime a million years ago, (or maybe it was last week), I bookmarked this page to come back to later when I had more time. (Like I must do 50 times a day.) Luckily my husband has noticed my bookmarking habit, and being the computer whiz that he is, has helped safeguard my beloved bookmarks by saving them to a master file in the event of a computer meltdown.

So in my latest attempts to bring some sort of order to my failed attempt at order, I once again got side tracked by all the lovely links and rediscovered the SPROOST website. They offer a quiz that allows you to learn about your decorating preferences by rating rooms on a scale of "Love it" down to "Hate it". I took it a few times because I found it hard to not rate the rooms based on the their architectural attributes. My verdict?

40% French Eclectic 40% Nantucket Style 20% Vintage Modern

I find these results very intriguing but not terribly surprising. I wish I could say I decorate my home in this fashion, but when you have kids . . . it's all about inexpensive, stain resistant, comfort. And it's about trying to create an environment that your significant other can be happy living in too. I am lucky that my husband is pretty laid back. I think his only decorating rule was that there be no "Precious Moments" figurines adorning any corners of this house . . . EVER.
I certainly couldn't agree more :)

Beauty Tips Tuesday - Give your locks some love!

Whether your hair is long or short, straight or curly, thick or thin, natural or chemically processed; harsh Winter conditions can take a toll on one's lovely locks. But taking care of your tresses doesn't have to cost a fortune. A few ingredients from your kitchen is all you need to get your strands back into shape. This time of year most hair is in desperate need of moisture. Frizzies, static, and dullness tend to be prevalent, and many women slather on heavy products that coat and further weigh down their hair making it even more lifeless and dull. To fix this, you need to do just a few things.

Do an apple cider vinegar hair rinse (regular vinegar works well too). I know . . . vinegar smells something awful, but once it dries you can't smell it. Why Vinegar you ask? Well, vinegar removes build-up and residue from the hair shaft and closes the hair's cuticles. Additionally, vinegar restores natural pH balances and helps prevent/soothes itchy scalps often caused by dry wintry weather.

Directions: Mix 1-2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar with 3 cups distilled water. (I say distilled because a lot of women have heavy minerals in their water and this too contributes to build up on the hair shaft. Pour over your hair as the final rinse. It will leave your hair feeling soft (and stinky until dry). Great for all hair types.

Do a rosemary olive oil conditioning treatment. OK. This one smells way better! Olive oil and rosemary stimulates, nourishes, conditions, and improves the strength and elasticity of your hair.
Directions:

1 bunch of rosemary leaves
1/2 cup olive oil (soybean oil works too)
plastic bag/plastic wrap
warm towel
bowl
strainer

Take the rosemary sprigs and remove the leaves from the stems. (discard the stems)
Combine rosemary leaves and oil in a small pan/double broiler. Heat until the oil is warm. Use a strainer to separate out the leaves and apply the prepared oil mixture throughout your hair, paying special attention to the roots and ends. Wrap your head with plastic wrap, a plastic baggie, or a shower cap, and then wrap your head in a towel to secure. Let the treatment sit in your hair for at least a half hour, or better yet, let it sit in your hair overnight. (Wear a shower cap to bed and lay a towel down to protect your pillow!) Shampoo out and lightly condition. In the mean time, you can also rub a little olive oil into your cuticles to soften and condition them. After rinsing your hair, push cuticles back with an orange stick, and apply a thick hand cream.

In addition to these two treatments, you always want to make sure you are rinsing your hair with cool water. Cool water helps to make the hair shiny by making the cuticle lay smooth. Also, you want to wash your hair as infrequently as possible. Most women wash their hair too often, causing excessive drying and unnecessary breakage.

Nothing like a great breakfast, (or in today's case, brunch), to get you started off on the right foot. My children absolutely adore pancakes and since my husband is the worlds best father, he has made it a tradition to make pancakes at least one weekend morning each and every week. How sweet is he? And to top that off, this morning, he not only let me sleep in to the luxurious hour of 10, but he also served me my personal favorite. A stack of blueberry cakes smothered in blueberry syrup, with a glass of V8's Pomegranate Blueberry juice. Yum, Yum, Yum!

I'm such a sucker for creative packaging!

I swear I would buy toilet water if it was all wrapped up in cutified goodness! OK, maybe not buy, because I actually have really good self restraint,(unless it's fabric), but I will ogle and gaze all dreamy like. It is an ongoing joke between my husband and I about how easily I am distracted by shiny baubles and glitzy marketing campaigns. I used to fight him on his initial accusation, but there have been a few too many instances now for me to deny it. Like the times when I meet him for lunch at his office,(downtown Minneapolis), and we briskly walk through the labyrinth of people and city streets to make our way to any number of our favorite lunching spots, only to have me randomly stop on a dime to check out a window display that has caught my eye,(all the while dropping our conversation in mid sentence, and nearly yanking him off his feet lol!)

So I was quite excited as I am sure you can imagine, to find my latest Etsy goodies so charmingly packaged. I was really surprised my items were so lovingly put together, as it was just a supply order and I wasn't expecting any creativity what so ever on the packaging front. Well Kirsten and Darcy from Three Dancing Magpie Supply out did themselves! I was so impressed I just had to take a picture to share.

I have ordered a few supplies off of Etsy before and they only ever arrived plainly stashed in an envelope like all the other supplies I have ever ordered. I never thought much of it because well . . . they were supplies. But when I opened up this package, my heart skipped a beat! I thought the little drawstring bags that held my buttons were just ridiculously delightful and their logo stickers are so cute! And though not pictured,(because I tore into them right away), they even took the time to wrap up the rare earth magnets I ordered in hot pink tissue paper and fabric scraps. See that adorable little tin? That is the free sample of bails they sent me! I don't know about you, but little things like that keep me coming back. And I must mention their customer service, because it is second to none. For those of you that don't already know, I have a background in retail management, and understand that really good and reliable customer service is often hard to find. I had convoed a few special requests,(not holding my breath that they would be accommodated), and they were all met without hesitation! Their communication is superb, their shipping was lightning fast, and my expectations were exceeded. I obviously highly recommend them to all my friends and readers!

Boiling eggs . . . easy, No?

So yesterday was "graduation day" for my husband and I from the CPEO class that we have been taking once a week for the last 7 weeks at my son's school. It was a class offered by Minneapolis Public Schools and designed to "Connect Parents to Educational Opportunities" for their children. All in all my husband and I felt that the class was good, though as it almost always goes, those parent's who could have truly benefited from the information weren't there.
We didn't really learn much that was new, but it kept up our motivation to continue to be highly involved in the education of our children and to help prepare them for college. And I must say, it is quite heartwarming to hear your 4 year old shout out "I'm going to college!" in an auditorium full of parents just at the break in the speaker's speech :) So with it being our last class, we were asked to participate in a potluck. If you know me at all, then you know exactly what I brought. Deviled eggs.

Deviled eggs were something that was always made for holidays and special occasions in my home growing up, and they were one of those foods that everyone looked forward to. (They rank right up there with turkey and stuffing.) I am not exactly sure when the tradition began, but I happily keep it going :)

Now when it comes down to making these "little bites of yum", (pretty much what I call anything yummy that can be devoured in a bite or two), there are TONS of different ways. I will generally enjoy almost any, except those made with sugar. Yuck! (sorry Great Grandma-in law) But now what I find is a must in any good deviled egg recipe, is properly boiled eggs.

I was taught to boil eggs by just putting as many as you need into boiling water and guesstimating the cook time. But I couldn't help noticing that all of the yoke centers always came out looking greenish gray on the outside and not bright sunny yellow like the ones I saw in magazines, cookbooks, etc. So that sent me on a quest to find an answer. What I found, is that my (and my Mom's, and whoever taught her) method for egg boiling was causing the unfavorable discoloration in our yolks. So yesterday I tried a new method and sure enough, my yolks were perfect! Not only was there no discoloration, but I found the yolks to be more creamy and a dream to pipe through my Wilton's icing tips. So what was the method? I got my instructions from the egg experts at www.IncredibleEdibleEgg.org .

To get started, put as many eggs as you want or can fit in a single layer on the bottom of a pan or pot. Put the pan in the sink. Run water into the pan until the water is 1 inch over the eggs. Put the pan on a burner. Turn it to medium-high heat.

Let the water come to a boil. Put the lid on the pan when the water is boiling. Move the pan onto a cold burner. Set the timer for 15 minutes for Large-sized eggs (or for 12 minutes for Medium-sized eggs or for 18 minutes for Extra Large-sized eggs).

Put the pan in the sink when the time is over. Run cold water into the pan until the eggs are cool. Put the eggs into the refrigerator if you're going to use them later or peel them if you're going to use them right away. Be sure to use all the cooked eggs up before a week is over.

Here's a couple helpful hints:

When I know I am going to be needing to boil up a bunch of eggs, I buy my eggs in advance and let them sit in the fridge for a week (but no longer then 10 days) before I cook them. The reason for this is that I have found it much easier to peel aged eggs then ones fresh from the market. If you want nice centered yolks, you will not want to use eggs older then 10 days, otherwise the whites will thin out too much and cause the yolk to move around. If you find yourself not able to use older eggs, you can always use this nifty egg peeling method :)

Don't have an egg carrier and worried about your eggs slipping around during transport? Just put a layer of matchstick carrots on the bottom of a baking dish and place the eggs on top. They add great color and help your eggs to stay put!

Polka Dots and Peep Toes. . .

Inspiration can come from just about anywhere, and yesterday it came from these really cute polka dot peep toe pumps I bought awhile ago, but have yet to wear. It is the middle of Winter here in Minnesota, so these shoes won't make it outside until late Spring, but I caught a glimpse of them when I was putting away one of my clutches in the closet. (I use a few of those inexpensive canvas shoe holders that hang from your closet rod to stash my little purses and seasonal shoes.) Anyway, I remembered I hadn't worn them yet because of the lack of accessories to go along with them. So I had myself a brainstorming session and in no time found myself at the craft store. I needed to snag a couple of yards of fabric anyway to complete a project, and who really needs a "reason" to go the the craft store? I could walk the isles for hours :) A few minutes into my search and I stumble upon these adorable micro dot fabrics! I initially was only looking for red, but they were just too delicious to walk away from, so I quickly snapped up every color I could find! It was overcast today, so I couldn't take any decent pictures of all the goodies I made, but if it is sunny tomorrow, I will share photos of what I will soon be offering in my shop ♥

Diamond Glaze where art thou?

So I ordered a free sample of Judikins Diamond Glaze well over a month ago and . . . and . . . nothing! I am bummed :( I'm not so broken up about losing my .62 cents in postage, I'm just bummed because I wanted to try it on my card guard project I was hoping to launch in time for Valentine's. I haven't found an adhesive/sealant that I have been 100% happy with yet and I thought maybe this glaze would do the trick. I would have just picked up a bottle online, but as I am sure many of you know, Judikins recently had a recall http://www.diamondglaze.com/ which has made it an increasingly difficult product to come by in the last month (at least at a reasonable price). So my card guards hit the back burner again. Hopefully I can find a different solution before Father's Day.
