Adventures in gardening...

After lots of planning and serious excitement, my husband and I finally put in a raised garden. We have both wanted to do this for some time now, and with the cost of organic produce and the need to save pennies, we figured there was no time like the present! Here are some photos of the project.

Before pic. We planted on the South side of our house.

We made it a family affair! Here the kids are helping my husband make the 4x8 cedar frame.

We lined it with landscape fabric to prevent weeds.

We then filled it with horse manure compost we purchased from a local farmer and used kite string to make a grid.

Then this guy stopped by and had to check out every corner of the bed before flying off. Anyone know what it is? We figure it is in the moth family, but we have never seen one like this before.

Three kinds of tomatoes, acorn and summer squash, sweet peas, salad greens, radishes, cucumbers, eggplant, red and green bell peppers, onions, two kinds of hot peppers, rosemary, sage, cilantro, basil, chives, and lavender... Finished!

My neighbors are so generous and offered up some of their raspberry bushes. I plan on planting those to the right of the down spout later this week, and then installing a rain barrel to the right of the compost bin.

I love it. I am so tempted to rip up my gardens and do boxes. We'll see. It looks so polished and pretty.

Your garden looks amazing, great work. You will be so proud when you harvest your first batch of goodies. And nothing has the flavor of freshness as your own grown fruits and veggies.
My husband is an amateur gardener and he is obsessed with his garden, hee hee. You can check out his blog, if you'd like, at vegetable123.blogspot.com
Also, that moth looking like critter is a hummingbird moth, so I was told. I too recently discovered these little guys and took some photos to post on my blog asking what they were, check it out here http://marbelladesigns.blogspot.com/2009/04/late-this-afternoon-my-husband-was.html
thanks for your post on my newly organized space. I too was inspired by some of my fellow bloggers posts of their work spaces.
have a great day!

NICE!! I think you'll enjoy the garden box. I have a 6 X 6 raised bed that I just LOVE. And haven't planted yet!! (Though all my seedlings are on the windowsill happily waiting!). Good luck, you've got a great patch of veggies there, I'd love to see pictures throughout the season!
